Osby is located in Skåne, in the south part of Sweden, not far from the Småland border. Today, you don’t notice anything, but if we go back to the middle of the 17th century, the border was here between Denmark and Sweden. An area and a time that has a large focus in both Denmark and Sweden, which we today call Snapphaneland. It was here that Danes and snapper fought against the Swedish jackal by taking advantage of the forest and wilderness, so nature still characterizes the area today. The Loshult assault, the burning of Örkened are just two of the events that today make for exciting reading, but which during this period – were bloody serious.

Since Snapphanelandet, which today is called Göinge, largely belongs to the Danish history book, the greatest interest also lies in Denmark. Many tourists come to Göinge every year to experience the nature and the feeling that existed a few hundred years ago. In the area, a large number of Danes have once again put down their stilts. Danish visitors and Danish residents are constantly increasing both in Osby and in the surrounding municipalities. The ones that attract the most today are that Göinge is Denmark’s closest primeval forest. Here is the Nyteboda Forest outside Lönsboda, hundreds of small and large lakes, available for swimming, canoeing and fishing. With hiking opportunities, nature experiences, bike tours, you only need 90 minutes from Copenhagen. So you stand in the middle of Sweden’s southernmost and northern Europe’s closest forest

Svarta Bergen – a tourist magnet

For today’s tourists, it is still the natural experience that rules. But there is much more to it than that. A major destination is precisely Lönsboda. Here lies one of the world’s most sought-after diabases as a firm foundation under the wilderness. The black diabase mined in Hägghult can be found all over the world. In works of art, on buildings, pavements, etc. Every year, the Black Mountains outside Lönsboda receive visitors from all over Europe, who want to experience the history and about quarrying in general, but the black diabase in particular. The finds have also attracted artists who use the black diabase as a material in their work. You get to experience that more when you visit Sliperiet in Gylsboda. An art center with diabase as a focus. Kullaro is another destination that produces both jewelry and furniture where the black diabase is sometimes combined with wood.

Lekoseum in new premises

For tourists, Osby has also become known for its toy manufacturing. This is where Brio has its origins, which for over a hundred years characterized both the municipality and the business world. You can get the whole story and a lot of games today at the Lekoseum in Osby. Here you can find the old machines that created the toys that today are collectors’ items all over the world. Here you get the whole story of the toys, as BRIO is largely history. At least in Sweden. You can get to the Lekoseum by car or train. The museum is located in the middle of the village, next to the railway station. So many families with playful children and expectant parents come via train from all over Skåne and Denmark. But also from above. This summer, Lekoseum is inaugurating its new premises, which from now on are located in the historic head office that BRIO had until the move a number of years ago.

Shop in Osby

Osby has approx. 13,000 inhabitants, most of whom live in the urban area. It gives the visitor a city feel and offers most of what you get in larger cities, but with limited numbers. It gives the community a charm and affordability that attracts walking and shopping. Several restaurants are offered here and in the municipality and the surrounding area, a number of accommodation options. A tour of the village gives many impressions where the special style of buildings has been used and preserved. One block is built like an old western town. Swansons travel has its headquarters here. But there is so much more to discover than we can fit into this description, so welcome to Osby.
